The Trail Review, Main Features, Gameplay and Video

22cans went dark after the disappointing release of Godus back in 2014 but they’ve come back with a new game that should help them revive themselves. Their new game is called The Trail and it’s based on Peter Molyneux’s movie of the same name.

There was not much hype surrounding this release and that’s a good thing. The low expectations and humble release made for a great reception.

Gameplay

This game is called ‘The Trail’ so you can expect a lot of walking. It starts off at a dock where the main character steps off a boat and starts a new life in a nearby town. The character’s walking speed can be adjusted to keep those long walks from taking too much time and along the way you have to scavenge for resources such as apples, rabbit fur and other small items which can be added to your rucksack.

Walking around and picking up random items makes The Trail sound more like a chore than a game however it gets interesting when you consider how beautiful the landscapes are. The stunning environments include icy landscapes, shaded woods and sun-kissed lakes. There’s also competition from other players to collect the limited resources which gives it a sense of urgency.

Keep in mind that you can’t walk forever. There’s a stamina meter to consider which dictates how long you’ll be able to keep searching. Once you have your resources you can settle down in a quaint town along with 19 other players and build a community together.

The Good

The beauty of the environments in this game are what make The Trail stand out. Without the breathtaking landscape it would just be another walkabout. While you take your journey through The Trail the collection and crafting of the resources that you find make it rewarding and worth coming back to.

Interacting with other players reduces the sense of loneliness and makes you believe that you are creating something grand; an empire of sorts.

The Bad

Favors are used as the game’s premium currency and just like most other free-to-play games, you’re going to have to put up some real-world money to get them. Unfortunately, you’re going to need to use those favors in order to acquire equipment that cannot be gotten through playing the game and completing its challenges.

You can make it through without having to buy favours but then you’ll be faced with the moral dilemma of whether to steal from other travellers or not. Descriptions for items are sometimes mislabeled and there are clear discrepancies when the tutorial claims that a certain object can only be found on the road but only in shops but the gameplay is enjoyable enough that you can ignore such things.

Conclusion

At first glance you’d be right to question the game’s premise of ‘just walking’ but you’ll quickly learn that it’s not that simple. The added features of collecting items and travelling to new environments makes it interesting and keeps you entertained. Several parts could have done with some polishing however those little issues won’t keep you from having fun.

The Trail is far from perfect. A few bugs here and there and questionable design choices make some parts of the game harder than it needs to be but none of those issues are deal-breakers.
