Spiderman Unlimited Review, Main Features, Gameplay and Video
The goal in Spiderman Unlimited is to take down a host of baddies that have come through a series of dimensional wormholes which have opened up above New York City. They are led by the Sinister Six who aim to turn this reality into their own play-pen.
This is usually the kind of thing that Thor would take care of but he’s on holiday so Nick Fury and SHIELD have asked Spiderman to help them fight off the invaders. They’ve given Spiderman a dimensional portal of their own which allows Spidey to call in different versions of himself to come in and help him.
The game is broken down into stages. Each one has a certain objective to be completed which is usually to run through a maze of hurdles before you can get to the cross-dimensional bad-guy at the end and take him down.
You use a particular Spiderman for each level and as you use them they gain experience and level-up to gain new abilities. If gaining experience points is taking too long then you can level-up your Spidermen by buying IOS-8 currency. Regular vials have a chance of producing a rare version of Spiderman but the premium IOS-8 in-game currency guarantees it.
Paying for the premium currency is avoidable as the game gives you plenty of opportunists to earn it by playing well. One way that the game lets you earn the premium currency is an never-ending level where you can use all of your stamina, collecting as much experience and vials as you can until you die. There is also the option of sending your reserve Spideys out on missions on their own.
Visuals are where this game strikes gold. The display is in classic comic book style making the gameplay feel like the characters are part of moving frames right out of a page. The other Spidermen all have their own costumes and abilities which gives the game great diversity of characters that will appeal to fanboys who love it when their heroes have new powers.
The dialogue is good as well, making you laugh once in a while instead of cringing like most video-game voice-actors do.
The controls are a bit of a let-down. Occasionally a few swipes will go unregistered for that can spell the end of your level in a side-swiper that demands quick reactions. And once you do die there is a quick reminder that you can buy your way out of trouble with the button right where your finger would regularly be during gameplay.
There is stamina bar which puts a limit on how long you can play, win or lose, and after it’s spent you have to wait ten minutes before it continues to the next level or give up some premium currency. This would make sense if you died and had to pay your way to the next level but this system means that you could be on a hot -streak then forced to sit down for a time out.
Spiderman Unlimited is definitely worth playing. It is a simple runner that will help you pass the time on the bus but fans of classic Spiderman games will be disappointed.
