Man or Vampire was created by a South Korean studio called Hidea. The first game from this studio was Undead Slayer and it became one of the best games in the RPG genre. Man or Vampire may not be as great as Undead Slayer but it still proves to be a game worth playing.
Gameplay
Man or Vampire is set in a world where the souls of the dead are alive. The vampires on the outer edges of this world are threatening the harmony of the Heavens and they can only be stopped by selecting a King of the Heavens. You have the pleasure of being that King.
A tutorial at the beginning of the game will show you how to play this turn-based RPG. You will also need to strategize and make careful use of the characters while you play through and collect as many resources as possible by looting carts, boxes and gravestones. Currency is very important for upgrading your characters.
What would an RPG game be without dungeons? Your treks through these dungeons will be defined by the enemies that you meet and fight. For example, you can expect to come across dungeon bosses that come out of nowhere.
The combat mechanics are easy to understand. The battlefield becomes a grid when a fight starts and you are able to move around the grid while performing specific actions such as healing, attacking or using your special abilities according to which grid space you are standing on. Successfully defeating each enemy will give you experience points.
You and the enemy will take turns attacking. Who attacks first and how many attacks you get per turn depends on the overall quality of the character’s stats. You can make use of items to increase your character’s stats and give you an edge in battle.
The character that you are using will have an effect on the grid. Characters that use swords to fight will only be able to attack if they are on a grid that is close to the enemy while other characters may attack from up to two grid tiles away and you can only heal while on green tiles. The arrangement of the tiles and how many movements you can make will change with each character.
The Good
The grid system gives some depth to combat. It forces you to think ahead in ways that standard turn-based battle mechanics cannot match.
The graphics and artwork are also worth mentioning. The bosses and monsters are well thought-out and the animations flow well.
The Bad
Sometimes it will feel like there’s too much happening on-screen.
