Dead Rivals – Zombie MMO for Windows 7/8/8.1/10/XP/Vista/MAC OS/Laptop
Developed by Gameloft for mobile devices, Dead Rivals for PC is a massively multiplayer online survival game that puts the players against hordes of zombies in a post-apocalyptic world. Zombie-killing is the main theme however Dead Rivals is much more than your average zombie game.
Being a zombie-survival game, players in Dead Rivals for PC spend a lot of time shooting the limbs and heads off of the undead who want to eat them. Players can use guns, grenades and anything they can pick up to take down the zombie hordes as stylishly as possible with customized characters.
Each character falls into one of three skill classes and each class can be upgraded with multiple weapons and firing modes along a variety of skill trees.
Controls are fairly simple thanks to the button on the bottom right of the screen. Holding the attack button fires the guns and swiping across the screen allows you to pan your view to see your surroundings. For those who prefer a wide view, you can choose it from the menu or go in close for an over-the-shoulder view.
Each quest is topped off by a big boss battle with the spewer. It appears right after you’ve killed all the zombies in the area and once it is dead a safe habitat is unlocked where the player can hide away from the zombies. Each level-ending also comes with rewards which can be used to upgrade weapons.
New weapons can be found by picking them off of dead foes.
The multiplayer elements blend well and allow players to start co-op missions or butt heads as they fight for resources. Since there are likely to be so many players on the map at any given time, being able to customize your own character is a welcome addition which makes each player feel unique.
Most of the mechanics are auto-play so the player’s interactions with the game are largely reduced to pointing and shooting. On-screen instructions guide you through most of the game and if you’re not careful they’ll guide you right into a $99 in-app purchase.
The server quality could do with an upgrade as well. From the moment you start playing , you’ll notice a significant amount of lag which is probably because the game servers can’t cope with the high volume of players jumping in and out.
Dead Rivals for PC is a great game for MMO lovers however it has a steep learning curve which makes it take a while to master. The auto-play elements are sure to turn some people off however if you look at this game as more of an exercise in managing your resources then it won’t be as much of a problem. The monetization aspects are borderline exploitative however that is the norm for MMOs nowadays.
An MMO for zombie killing is rare therefore Dead Rivals for PC provides a unique experience that incorporates elements of team work nicely. Players who don’t like massively multiplayer games are given the opportunity to play PvP battles instead.
